Victorian (1837-1901) oval yellow gold brooch featuring seed pearls and turquoise gemstones. The brooch has a long safety chain to protect the wearer from losing the brooch. In the mid-century the subject of gem-lore became very popular. For the Victorian's a turquoise gemstone was thought to preserve sight and protect from injury. Even today in the north-east, there is a proverb stating 'That a Turquoise given by a loving hand carries with it happiness and good fortune'. Additionally pearls had multiple meanings, primarily they were associated with 'beauty'.
